AS 9100, the Aerospace Basic Quality Standard, is a quality
system model for the aerospace industry. It was initially published
by the Society
of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in May 1997.
The AS 9100 standard is based on ISO 9001 with additional requirements
specific to the aerospace industry. The standard was developed
by the International Aerospace Quality Group, with representatives
from aerospace companies in the Americas, Asia and Europe. The
current release of the standard is the AS 9100 standard which
was revised in 1999.
Rather than defect detection, AS 9100 sets specific requirements
aimed toward defect prevention methods, such as variability
and scrap reduction, error proofing, statistical process control
(SPC) and visual controls.
Along with ISO 9000 certification, most aerospace companies
require their suppliers to be AS 9100 compliant and/or certified.
Only a small number of registrars are accredited to issue
AS 9100 certifications. Make sure that the registrar your
company chooses has the proper accreditation.
